New River Garden Club: The New River Garden Club will be kicking off this year on Jan. 23 at 9:30 a.m., at New River Plantation Club House, Sneads Ferry. Our guest speaker this month will be Jon Schwarz of Pender Pines Garden Center. Refreshments will be served. The club always welcomes new members and guests to join us. It is a great way to meet new people and to learn which plants grow best in this area.

Linda Hollis started the program after the April 18, 2008, death of her granddaughter, Emily Grace Hollis and is seeking others to get involved. Emily had brain cancer and spent 20 months at Duke undergoing treatment. Paws for Reading Program at the Hampstead Branch Library: Held weekly on Thursday afternoons from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Children sign up for a 15 minute private session to read to Pepsi, a certified therapy dog, and Miss Barbara, her handler. They may bring a favorite book or choose something at the library. Pepsi passes no judgement so the child doesn't feel any stress or anxiety that may be present in a more formal setting. While the canines for reading program is designed to help improve reading skills studies have shown that it can also lead to emotional and social benefits. OCPAW (Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare, Inc), is an all-volunteer 501(c) non-profit. Helping residents spay/neuter their pets through our Paws-Ability program which provides low-cost vouchers to assist you. Sixteen local veterinarians support the program.
