The photo is reportedly from a 2017 vacation
WILMINGTON -- As locals read the news of mass shootings this weekend, some may have noticed something familiar. Connor Betts, the 24-year-old gunman reported to have killed nine people and injured 27 others in Dayton, Ohio, is seen in a photo with his sister, Megan, in downtown Wilmington in a story from the New York Post.
Megan Betts, 22, was among those killed in the attack.
Several news agencies are saying the photo is from a July 2017 vacation in the area posted by their mother, Moira Cofer Betts, with the caption “This may be my most favorite picture ever!” The same Facebook account shows other photos from the area and indicates that Wrightsville Beach was a favorite spot for the family.
Posts to the Facebook pages for Betts' parents, Moira and Steve, indicate the family made a yearly trip to Wrightsville Beach each August. One post mentions them staying near Johnnie Mercer's Fishing Pier; New Hanover County property records do not indicate that the family owned property here.
"We would LOVE to move down here," Moira Betts wrote in a comment on one of the family's Wrightsville Beach photos in 2014. "I keep pushing Megan to Coastal Carolina (University)."
Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Linda Thompson said Monday that she was not aware of any investigators with the Dayton shooting case contacting local law enforcement.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said that he was the aware of the photo circulating nationally, but as of Monday said he had not heard about Dayton investigators contacting any officials in the city for information.
The StarNews is continuing to investigate the family's connection to the Wilmington area. And will post updates to this story when more details are known.
