Two Holly Ridge residents have been helping displaced residents in the community stay warm.

The couple has been donating quilts for several years now, which officers carry with them, Police Chief Keith Whaley said. Previously, the department carried donated sheets from Onslow Memorial Hospital, but the quilts are warmer.

The blankets are then dispersed to those in need when officers encounter them, whether that's on scene or through an investigation.

"There's times we come up up on a vehicle crash or something, and it's so cold out there," Whaley said.
