King David wrote “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety” (Psalms 4:8 CSB).

David understood his rest could not be found in his kingdom wealth, power, or wisdom, but only in the Lord. In those days, finding rest in the Lord was equal to going up to the house of God. David is famed for saying, “I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live” (Psalms 23:6 CSB). Today, finding a local church that you can call home and family is what all of this means.

When our family received a life-altering diagnosis of our third daughter the doctors asked if we had a support system. Upon telling the doctors that we belonged to a church, they asked no more questions. And I can testify having a church family to come home to each weekend while traveling back and forth to UNC-Chapel Hill over a month was refreshing and restful.

Finding a church in Onslow County may be difficult not because of availability, but consistency. While I cannot promise complete consistency, I can offer confidence in recommending the churches with which my own is associated.

The New River Baptist Association is a family of Southern Baptist Convention churches aimed at infusing the gospel of Jesus Christ in our entire region. They are committed to the Bible, outreach, and an overall positive impact on our community.

The association contains 32 churches and three church plants. Each church has the freedom and responsibility of its own governance, but they volunteer to cooperate to accomplish the most good. This also provides consistency for those looking for churches that have similar belief and practice. Dr. Joe Cappar leads the NRBA as its Associational Missionary.

I personally serve the association under Dr. Cappar as the Ministers’ Conference President. Ministers meet monthly with the goal of promoting humility of self among the pastors and a high view of God through hope in Jesus Christ. They sing together, pray, listen to devotions, and promise each other to live in consistency with Christ’s desire for them as gospel ministers. As these ministers are fortified in association, you can be confident that you will be encouraged at any one of the churches where they serve.

In order to connect with an NRBA church, you will find the list of churches and their addresses contained in this article. For sure, you can search for a church using the internet, but you may be unaware of those who have particular affiliation and commitment like the one I have described above. Therefore this list will be a help to you in finding a church to connect with and to call your own family. For further assistance, contact Dr. Joe Cappar, Associational Missionary with the New River Baptist Association at 910-347-3146.
