1. Celebrate traditions

The Polynesian Festival is slated for 12 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Onslow Pines Park, 1244 Onslow Pines Road in Jacksonville. The festival is slated to include dancing, food, crafts, local vendors, music, games and more.

2. Eat junk

Friday is National Junk Food Day. Whether you have a sweet tooth or crave salty snacks this is the day to indulge. Or take it up a notch and combine sweet and salty by trying chocolate covered potato chips or chocolate dipped pretzels.

3. Cool off

Sunday is Hot Enough For Ya Day, and, boy, is it perfect timing — most of the U.S. is suffering through a heat wave. Go to a pool or the beach, play in sprinklers, eat ice cream — just find a way to stay cool!

4. Catch Tour de France

The Tour de France ends on Sunday, and you’ll be able to catch the exciting conclusion on TV. Check your listings for times, or head to the official website.

5. Watch sports

There are more sports options this weekend if you just want to sit back and stay cool: The WNBA All-Star Game takes place Saturday at 3:30 p.m. EDT on ABC; Major League Baseball is in action; and several NASCAR races will take place. Check your listings for TV times. 

6. Watch a movie

In theaters this weekend is “Dunkirk” from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan about the famous evacuation of Allied troops from France during a fierce battle in World War II or check out “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” a science fiction film written and directed by Luc Besson and a guaranteed visually stunning flick.  

7. Movies in the park

Finding Nemo will be playing at Movie in the Park at Jacksonville Commons, 100 Recreation Lane. The fun kicks off at 7 p.m. with the movie starting at sunset. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Meanwhile in Surf City, The Secret Life of Pets will kick off at 8:30 p.m. at Soundside Park, 517 Roland Ave. Concessions available. 

8. Test your smarts

30 Second Rocks Music trivia will be happening 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Carolina Ale House, 1649 Western Blvd. in Jacksonville. 

9. Get fresh

The Onslow County Farmers Market will be held 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at 4024 Richlands Hwy. in Jacksonville. Fresh produce and handmade artisan goods will be available. For more information, call 910-455-5873.
