Executive Editor Pam Sander will be the Coastal Carolina Group's regional editor

WILMINGTON -- StarNews Executive Editor Pam Sander will now oversee three additional GateHouse Media daily newspapers and several weeklies with a promotion to the Coastal Carolina Group's regional editor.

Sander, who has been executive editor since September 2012, will expand her duties to include the Jacksonville Daily News, Kinston Free Press and New Bern Sun Journal. She will continue to be based out of Wilmington, but expects to travel between the newspapers more often.

The promotion comes as GateHouse, which absorbed the four publications as part of its purchase of the Halifax Media Group in 2015, has made a push to produce regional content of interest to all Southeastern North Carolina residents. Over the next several weeks, Jacksonville, New Bern and Kinston will join the StarNews in being produced by GateHouse' design center in Austin, Texas.

"Ever since the StarNews and these papers were bought by Halifax, I have been a big proponent of shared content, shared thinking and thinking regionally," Sander told StarNews staff Friday, after Coastal Carolina Group Publisher Mike Distelhorst made the announcement.

Sander also has been a leader in pushing for a shared-content program for GateHouse daily newspapers nationwide as part of her role on the corporate Editors Council.

The regional editorial effort has already taken effect. Earlier this year, StarNews reporter Adam Wagner became regional environmental and coastal issues reporter. Last month, the StarNews sent several reporters to lend a hand to the short-staffed New Bern Sun Journal newsroom. Additionally, staff members went to Kinston in October to help cover the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

"There may be more opportunities like that, in little spurts, in the future," Sander said.

Sander's promotion is effective immediately.
