For 17 years, the Defense Commissary Agency has been supporting military families not only through grocery savings, but also through scholarships.

Applications for the 700 scholarship grants for the 2017-18 school year are being accepted through Feb. 17.

The scholarship grants, worth $2,000 each, are available to active-duty, reserve/guard, or retired military commissary customer sons and daughters.

According to the scholarship website, recipients must be enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in a four-year undergraduate college or university, accredited in the U.S. or a two-year community college.

They must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 basis.

There will be at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received, and additional recipients will be selected based on a prorated basis, so more applicants will be selected from those commissaries with larger numbers of applicants.

The scholarship awards will be given for a maximum of four years.

Applications can be found on the website or at a commissary and must include transcripts as well as a short essay.

Applications must be turned in to the most shopped or nearest commissary no later than Feb. 17.

Applications may also be mailed but must be addressed to a specific individual within the commissary.
