SURF CITY | A Sneads Ferry man was arrested this week by Surf City police for possession of heroin and other drug-related charges.

According to a release from Surf City Police Chief Ron Shanahan, Paul Eugene Gilbert, 53, was approached by officers Tuesday after he was observed sitting in his vehicle while in a “semi-conscious state.”

Officers searched Gilbert’s vehicle and found 21 bindles of heroin, multiple prescription pills, including Oxycodone, Adderall, Zanex and Suboxone, as well as marijuana and packaging materials.

Police then executed a search warrant of Gilbert’s Surf City hotel room, which yielded additional amounts of marijuana.

Gilbert was charged with possession with intent to sell and/or deliver heroin; possession with intent to sell and/or deliver a schedule II substance; felony maintaining a vehicle for narcotics; having unsealed wine or liquor in the passenger area of a motor vehicle; multiple counts of possession of drug paraphernalia; and one count each of possession of a schedule III, IV and VI controlled substance.

He remains in Pender County jail with bail set at $50,000.
