Second Amendment must be protected in gun control fight

What does the Second Amendment of The Constitution of the United States of America mean to you?

This topic has been tossed around since before the terrible tragedies that have plagued our country by mentally unfit individuals have taken place, and I have no doubt, it will continue to be discussed for years to come.

When I bring up this question to fellow members of my community, I get one resounding response that trumps all other. The second amendment gives the citizens of the United States of America the right to protect itself against a corrupt government. Wow. When I read the Second Amendment, it is quite simple.

ďA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to  Keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. ď

Perhaps these folks are right. This amendment does not focus solely on an individualís right to protect themselves, which most certainly everyone believes in, but also states that a well regulated militia being a necessity to the security of a free state.

In the press lately I have seen numerous articles about citizens (including police departments) that are in an uproar over recent changes to gun laws. New York is a prime example of this event. The common argument is that none of these restrictions will keep a firearm from the hands of a criminal. Criminals donít care and donít follow the law which is why they are known as criminals. To tell a law abiding citizen, who may or may not have served in our military to ensure all of our freedoms, that they can no longer carry a gun that hold more than seven rounds makes no sense to me. Seven rounds? Do you want to know what kind of weapons carry less than seven rounds? The small and easily carried such as revolvers and pocket sized pistols. The police departments I have encountered over the years generally have handguns that carry at least 10 rounds of ammunition. Who are we punishing here? Not the mentally unstable or criminally charged folks. Again, they donít care. They will just bring along what they want and most likely, will not have acquired that weapon through any legal means, especially going to a gun shop and having a background check done. Criminals break laws. End of story.

I think before another state has the chance to limit the rights of law abiding citizens, it better find a way to get the criminals off the streets. How often have we heard a violent criminal was recently released from jail only to commit another terrible and tragic crime, or to learn the jails are too full and people are being released after a simple slap on the hand with no real punishment or deterrent to commit another crime? There is a broken system here, but itís not the Second Amendment.

Remember, knowledge is power. Use your voice and speak up. The United States of America belongs to the people, not a handful of politicians.
