Are you a retired law enforcement officer, residing in North Carolina now and wondering about the HR218? Well, let me share a little bit of information. Because laws were changed a few years ago, you are now able to qualify in North Carolina. Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington offers a course. You pay $25 and take the course. Once passed your HR 218 is valid until next year when you renew again. Or there is a simpler option (my opinion): You can take the NC Conceal and Carry Class that will allow you to carry any gun (not just the ones you qualify with). The NC Conceal Carry is a five year term that requires a renewal (financial) for another five years. Of course carry your retired LE credentials.

New York made my shame list this week when an anti-gun group won a court decision what would allow them access to records of residents of the State of New York that own AR-15s.  Maybe gun groups need to put gun records under Health Care laws and then HIPAA would protect them.

News Flash: bad guys and criminals do not disclose information. Stop punishing law abiding citizens.

With our long wet and cold winter and now our stormy spring, itís not so easy to find a good place to practice with your firearm. The Holly Shelter Game Land has been officially closed to target shooters as of May 1 so donít go there. Indoor ranges or joining a gun club may be the best bet unless you own land in the county.

Simple outdoor rules to remember: Always shoot in a safe direction and into a media (sand, dirt, rubber) that will absorb the bullet to prevent it from leaving the property. Pender County requires 200 feet from a dwelling while Onslow County is 500 feet from a dwelling. New Hanover County does not have a distance requirement, but does state that bullets must remain on the property of the shooter and be shot in a safe direction.

Not sure about the rules in your area? Call the local law enforcement and established gun shops. They will be able to provide the information you need.

Remember knowledge is power and asking questions is a good thing.
