Heart walk

Registration continues for the Feb. 15 “5K Walk to Beat Heart Disease” hosted by Surf City Parks & Recreation and Eldercare. The $20 registration fee includes a shirt for this untimed event, and proceeds go to American Heart Association.

Door prizes will be drawn at the conclusion of the event and refreshments will be available. Register in advance at or on the day of the event at the race site. To be guaranteed a shirt, registration should be in by Feb. 8.  For more information call 910-328-4887 or e-mail 


Historical Society

Join the Historical Society of Topsail Island for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Assembly Building. 

Jim Barber, coordinator of the Bird Island Stewards, will share a presentation about the history of Bird Island, an undeveloped barrier island located between Sunset Beach and Little River Inlet, and the location of The Kindred Spirit Mailbox, a mailbox with a notebook inside for any and all visitors to the island to find and sign.
