The Pender County Health Department is promoting the statewide Preteen Vaccine Week, Feb. 9 through 15, to remind families about recommended immunizations for 11-and 12-year olds.

A focus of Preteen Vaccine Week 2014 is increasing immunization against Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Despite its effectiveness against HPV infections that can lead to cervical cancer and other cancers in both sexes, HPV vaccination rates remain low. Health professionals are also urging parents to have their preteen children vaccinated with the whooping cough booster shot, Tdap. Other immunizations recommended for preteens include the meningococcal vaccine, and a second chickenpox shot. Everyone 6 months of age and older are also recommended to receive an annual flu vaccine.

For more information, call or visit the Pender County Health Department: 803 South Walker St., Burgaw, or 910-259-1230.
