RICHMOND, Va. — Elon has been picked near the bottom in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer this season, checking in eighth out of 10 teams in the league’s predicted order of finish.

Hofstra, the reigning CAA champion, was chosen as the conference favorite in the voting by the league’s coaches. Hofstra received all except one of the 10 first-place votes. The Pride went unbeaten at 9-0 in CAA play last season.

Northeastern placed second in the preseason poll and was given the only first-place vote that didn’t go to Hofstra.

James Madison was selected third, with Drexel fourth, William & Mary fifth and College of Charleston sixth.

Delaware was picked seventh. After Elon in eighth, UNC Wilmington and Towson rounded out the remainder of the poll.

Hofstra defender Madeline Anderson and College of Charleston forward Laura Ortega shared the league’s Preseason Player of the Year honor.

Elon didn’t put a player on the 12-member preseason all-conference team.

The Phoenix, which opens the season Thursday, plays Saturday night at Coastal Carolina in an exhibition game.
