Turtle-nesting season draws to close

On Topsail Island, the first nest of the season hatched on Wednesday.

As of Friday, there had been 46 nests documented along Topsail Island, including North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach, according to Terry Meyer of the Topsail Turtle Project, which monitors nesting activity on the island.

“We have nests from one tip (of the island) to the other,” she said.

Even with additional nests laid in August, Meyer said they won’t reach last year’s number of 136 nests along Topsail but she said fluctuations in numbers are expected.

There are 38 nests to date at Onslow Beach, where there were 74 recorded last year. And Hammocks Beach State Park in Onslow County now has three nests after a late start to the season.

The most nests recorded in the local area so far this season are the 99 documented at Cape Lookout National Seashore, though 10 were lost due to animals or high tide. Of the 99, one of the nests is for a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.
