If you thought last weekend’s weather begged for a hot bowl of chili, you were among more than 1,000 people who showed up to get their ladleful during the debut of the Topsail Chili Festival. The first annual festival, hosted by the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and sanctioned by the International Chili Society, was held Nov. 16 and 17 at the Sneads Ferry Community Center. Eleven chili competitors from as far as Connecticut to as local Sneads Ferry and Surf City stirred things up for tasters and judges who voted for the following winners:

Contest results:

Red Chili

1st place: Kathy Myers
2nd place: Smokey Colwell
3rd place: Dave Longo

Green Chili/ Chili Verde

1st place: Larry Weltikal
2nd place: Smokey Colwell
3rd place: Jan Sprouse

Salsa
1st place: Smokey Colwell
