Texas is not an open carry state? What? Every cowboy in Texas is supposed to carry a leather gun belt with two revolvers! I am very disappointed. Hollywood has lied to me.
I agree Texas should simply be open carry, like our wonderful state. What I don’t agree with is the tactics of some extreme “publicity” groups that walk through Target department stores with rifles on slings. The topic at hand here is pistols, not rifles, right? Scaring people and making everyone point and stare is not always a good thing. Leave your big guns at home folks, we understand what you are trying to do, but I think it may be backfiring.
As a gun owner and a Conceal and Carry holder, I don’t want to shop alongside a bunch of people with rifles dangling over the fresh produce. Maybe it’s just me.
Across the country open-carry should be allowed for law abiding citizens, and all state residents should be able to obtain a Conceal and Carry permit. Again, we need to reward the good citizens of this country, not make them seem dishonest.
Now back to basics. I just want to make sure you know the local rules before you go shooting outdoors.
In Onslow County you must be 500 feet away from a dwelling and shooting in a safe manner.
In Pender County you must be 200 feet away from a dwelling and shooting in a safe manner.
In New Hanover County the projectile cannot leave your property.
No outdoor shooting is allowed within city limits — except for ranges or approved events. City limits are not always easy to determine so check with the zoning office in your area. Just because you have a particular zip code does not mean you are in a city limit.
We all know that guns can be loud, but we also live in an area where topography does not buffer sound (like mountains) so therefore noise travels. It is easy to be concerned when you hear gunfire, but note that most likely it is safe practice and further away than you think.
Knowledge is power, all guns are not fully automatic, and lots of people out there are good guys (and gals) with guns. Play by the rules and be safe during this summer season!
