In 1989, nearly a million young people, mostly students, began a protest demanding greater freedoms and less restrictions. These young people were the future of their country and wanted change to make their lives better. They were not violent or destructive. The Chinese government’s response? Turning its own military against its people and killing and/or arresting thousands. Tiananmen Square was terrible and needs to be a lesson to everyone.
The ability to gather and protest is protected in our Constitution. We have the right to say no, this is wrong and we want it changed. We have the right to expect a government response to not be violent, since again, we are the people that make up the government. We have fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles and cousins that serve in the Armed Forces every day. We are them and they are us. A government willing to turn against its own people is a government that needs to be changed, and quickly.
The oath taken by our military is as follows:
“I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
So why am I bringing this up you ask? Well for over two years now I have heard rumblings from all types of people, military included, that have told me that military personnel are being asked, “If ordered to fire against our own citizens, will you?” The frightening point of this terrible question is that the general consensus is that if you say no, you will not be remaining in the military. Now I don’t know if this is true and we all know how vicious lies spread like fire, but either way it makes my blood run cold.
Would our military, designed to protect and serve our great country and its citizens, be used against those within its boundaries to commit harm? Certainly the answer must be no and nothing less should be acceptable.
This summer grab a pocket copy of the Constitution and read it. It’s not long and quite simple but very powerful.
Remember knowledge is power, and ignorance is dangerous!
