This is the time of year when property owners are receiving those dreaded tax bills, but did you know:

The property tax rates for the Town of Surf City and the Town of Holly Ridge are both .41 cents per $100?

The Town of Surf City has an annual budget of $13,458,929. Of this budget, the police department receives $1,668,708 which is just over 12 percent of the budget. If you call the police department (910-328-7711) after 5 p.m. a dispatcher from Pender County answers to help you.

The Town of Holly Ridge has an annual budget of approximately $2,018,391. Of this budget, the police department receives $761,020 which is nearly 38 percent of the budget. If you call the police department (910-329-4076) after 5 p.m. (or on weekends or holidays) it just rings.

The Town of Surf City has a fire department budget of $850,444 (about half of the police budget).

The Town of Holly Ridge gives a donation of $152,000 to its fire department (don’t worry, next year it’s scheduled to drop to $102,000). This donation is approximately 19 percent of the police budget. They also give a $2,000 donation to Turkey Creek Fire Department, which will now serve all of Summer House.

Who else receives a Holly Ridge donation? The Holly Ridge Parks and Rec department gets $2,200; the fireworks display gets $10,000; and the community center building gets $9,500..
