The Town of Surf City Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with The A’Bout Time Band will host a free concert Aug. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Soundside Park. Local merchants have donated items that will be raffled or sold in a silent auction to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 
 
 
Historical talk 
Historian Baylus C. Brooks will give a talk titled the “Historical Assassination of George Burrington: First Royal Governor of North Carolina” on Aug. 28 at Pender County Public Library in Burgaw. The 45-minute program will be held at 6 p.m. in the library meeting room at 103 S. Cowan St. The program is free to the public with financial support from the Friends of Pender County Library.
