Diabetes self-management
The Diabetes Self-Management Program at the Pender County Health Department is back up and running. The program provides a one-on-one educational session with a trained diabetes nurse, an interactive class and a follow-up meeting to monitor progress.
Elisabeth Weaver, RN is available to receive referrals from primary care providers. Classes are held on the last Wednesday of each month, and include information on how and when to check your blood sugars, understanding how medication works, as well as what foods you can eat and how to count carbohydrates and read food labels. Participants will learn about what makes their blood sugars go up and down, the signs and symptoms of high and low blood sugar, the acute and chronic complications of diabetes, exercise, foot care and sick day rules. The classes are accredited by the American Diabetes Association and cover all recommended components.
For more information, contact Weaver at 910-259-1371.
