The Veterans of Foreign Wars is a non-profit service organization for men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States in combat areas. VFW Post 9983 is located at 188 Hines Stump Sound Church Road, one mile north of Holly Ridge at the flags. The canteen is open from 3 to 8 p.m. daily with extended hours for special events. The hall is available for rental and catering is available, special consideration for nonprofits needing meeting space.
Qigong class for cancer survivors
Surf City Parks & Recreation is hosting a Qigong class for cancer survivors on Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Avenue Beach Access off of South Shore Drive in Surf City. Qigong consists of slow flowing movements, coordinated with deep breathing and meditative focus to balance the flow, called Qi in Chinese, meaning “life energy leading to overall well-being.”
Participants should wear loose-fitting clothing that encourage and allow movement. In case of inclement weather, Qigong will be moved to the Surf City Community Center, 201 Community Center Drive. The final class will be June 13. These is no charge for the classes, but participants are asked to sign up in advance at Surf City Community Center or contact SCP&R Wellness Coordinator Linda Carlsen at 910-328-4887 or by e-mail at
