Great news for the folks in New Jersey. The Law and Public Safety Committee voted 8-0 to push through a law that would prohibit the infamous “bump fire stocks.” The bad news? This item is already illegal in New Jersey. Hey, they tried, right?

On Wednesday, Dec. 6 the U.S. House was slated to vote on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. What does this really mean? In simple terms, like a Driver’s License, if you have a Concealed Carry Permit it would be accepted in all states. As of right now each state determines if you are law abiding or a criminal. That makes no sense. Currently North Carolina already reciprocates with 37 other states – but as a rule of thumb I warn people don't go north. Go west or south (until this becomes law).

Another piece of legislation that is probably going to get lumped with the H.R. 38 Bill is the “Fix Nics” package that would allow several more agencies to add information to the federal data base to help in the determination of back ground checks. Sounds simple right? The largest complaint about this is how do you remove wrong or prejudiced information provided by a local agency? Like everything, there are always going to be kinks that need to be worked out.

This past week our community suffered a terrible loss with the death of 3-year-old Mariah Kay Woods. Nothing incurs instant rage in people like the loss of an innocent life, especially when it could have been avoided. Little miss Paitin Fields, a beautiful little 5-year-old girl, also from our area, was just laid to rest after being strangled, raped and murdered by someone still to be arrested. What the heck is going on?

Both of these little girls were part of the “system.” Mariah’s father had been struggling for a year to gain custody while Paitin had been placed in the care of her grandmother to keep her safe. What happened?

I don’t care about Russia. No one in Russia told me who to vote for. What I care about is the most vulnerable and innocent part of our society being lost and let down. Shame on all of us. Have you ever witnessed someone doing something wrong to a child or another person and didn’t call the police because you didn’t want to get involved? Have you ever seen someone arrested for a violent crime and the system allowed them to plea down to a lesser charge, setting them free? Shame on us for allowing this.

We have become a society of “No Accountability” and it will only get worse. I’m tired of the courts being a revolving door for violent, drug addicted people who don’t care about you or me.

Last week a NC man, who is a self-proclaimed 20 year drug addict, was sentenced to 10 years in jail for killing a man in a head on collision that was frightening similar to the accident he caused only five years earlier resulting in the death of a lovely young woman. He received 75 days in jail for her death.

I’m tired of constantly hearing excuses for behavior instead of people saying, “They did it, they need to be accountable for it.” We are only hurting our own society and our own towns and those we care about that live here.

Remember knowledge is power, your life is important and turning a blind eye is not okay.
