Tacos and healthy acai bowls to-go at the beach are just what surfers need.
Surf City Surf School not only moved to a new facility at 107 N. Shore Drive this year, but are now serving food out of the back window where visitor’s can enjoy fresh and local fare at big picnic tables in between catching waves.
Shaka Taco is the brainchild of owner Cody Leutgens and owner/chef Steve Christian.
Open for about a month now, the taco stand is serving a handful of different tacos, taco bowls, acai bowls, wings and fresh specials daily.
“The motivation behind this is that we both come from the area and are really familiar with what the area has to offer,” Leutgens said. “Surf City really lacked a fresh, local and fast option.”
Now locals have a place, he said, they can walk in off the beach covered in sand, put their surfboard on the ground and grab a taco before heading out again.
While Christian is a rookie restaurateur, he is bringing years of experience from cooking in kitchens around the state. His menu creations bring some of his favorite dishes to taco form, such as the pork taco which has a peppadew slaw which was conceived from a pizza with the same ingredients.
Housed in what was once a restaurant, the Surf City Surf School has transformed the interior dining area into a retail and surf school space, eliminating the need for a wait staff.
Shaka Taco is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. For more information call 910-616-3118.
