No charges will be filed against a 26-year-old woman who shot a Marine in the face over the weekend, according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
She wasn’t trying to shoot anyone, Maj. Chris Thomas with the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.
Ashton Paige Meritt, 26, of Hardison Road in Sneads Ferry hosted a get-together at her home over the weekend. Meritt fired a handgun, a gift from her husband, inside the house and the shot went through a wall and a door before hitting Cpl. Jacob Zelie, 21, a Camp Lejeune Marine, in the lower part of his face, Thomas said.
The sheriff’s office was called to the 406 Hardison Road residence at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Thomas said, and Zelie was transported to the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.
There was alcohol involved in the incident, Thomas said, but the reports have not come back for the blood alcohol levels yet.
After interviews and reviewing the case with the district attorney’s office, Thomas said no charges against Meritt will be filed.
Zelie is from Erie, New York and serves with Range Company, Weapons Training Battalion, Bravo Range, and originally specialized as an assault man, fortifying targets with rockets, demolitions, and breaking and infiltrating techniques, according to information provided by Camp Lejeune. He currently works as a marksmanship coach.
