Marine wounded by bullet shot in another room

A Marine was injured over the weekend in what officials are calling an accidental shooting.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Hardison Road in Sneads Ferry at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, said Maj. Chris Thomas. A 23-year-old woman shot a handgun inside the home, and the bullet went through a couple of walls, hitting Jacob Zelie, a Camp Lejeune Marine, Thomas said.

Zelie, age unavailable, was transported to the Naval Hospital on Camp Lejeune where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Thomas said he is expected to make a full recovery.

Thomas said the sheriff’s office is not releasing the alleged shooter’s blood alcohol level or name due to the ongoing investigation, but Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller said there was alcohol at the party.

“I really think it’s important for people to know that alcohol and firearms do not mix,” Miller said.

As of Monday there had been no charges filed against the alleged shooter.

“The investigation is still fresh,” Miller said, and Thomas added that at this time it appears to be an accidental shooting.

The sheriff’s office is working with the district attorney’s office to determine whether charges will be filed, but Miller said there is a potential for a negligence charge or other charges.
