The recount is underway.

The Onslow County Board of Elections began recounting ballots Tuesday afternoon after a recount request from a competitor in the state auditor race.

“All it is, is everybody has to take their ballots and run them back through the counting machine to see if there’s any different numbers coming up,” Rose Whitehurst, Onslow County Board of Elections director, said.

The recount will not affect local election results, she said.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections reported Tuesday that Chuck Stuber received 2,253,390, or 49.93 percent of the vote. The State Board of Elections also reported that Beth Wood received 2,259,383 or 50.07 percent of the vote.

According to a recount notice by the Onslow County Board of Elections, a 48 hour notice is not required for this type of meeting.

Whitehurst said that counties state-wide have to “have it finished by Thursday afternoon.”
