It's now official.
Two re-elected Onslow County commissioners — Jack Bright and Paul Buchanan — along with three newly elected commissioners — Royce Bennett, Robin Knapp and Mark Price — each raised their right hands and pledged to do their best for Onslow County as they took their oaths of office to start the board's regular meeting Monday night. Their first vote? A unanimous one selecting Jack Bright as the board's chairman.
“I am humbled and proud that the board chose me to preside over the meeting and that’s really all I do and sign the documents, but I’m looking forward to it and I’m ready to roll my sleeves up and go to work,” Bright said.
Royce Bennett was voted vice chairman 4 to 1 vote with Buchanan voting for himself.
In other actions, David Cotton was appointed as interim county manager and Brett J. DeSelms was selected to serve as interim county attorney.
“We’ve got so many projects going on now and David Cotton has been involved in those projects so it was just a good fit for him to continue with what he was doing because he’s got all the knowledge and who to contact, so we’re glad to have him as our county manager,” Bright said.
He also said DeSelms was selected because he was one of two attorneys from Jacksonville who had applied and was the lowest bidder of the two, Bright said.
