Members of the arts community are coming together to help feed their neighbors.
The Empty Bowls Project Onslow 2016 will be held on Nov. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stateside Elementary School, located on Gum Branch Road, to raise funds and support for the Onslow Community Soup Kitchen through a unique dinner event.
“Empty Bowls Project is a community event that includes local businesses, local potters, schools, artists and volunteers, all in the community, to come together to raise money for the soup kitchen. It’s really a community project,” said Leah Filomena, the event coordinator.
For $20 guests can purchase a bowl handcrafted by a local potter and enjoy an evening of soup, bread, entertainment and awareness.
“When guests come in (the night of the event) they can get a choice of two soups, pick out pottery bowl from a local potter. Then while they’re eating they can enjoy music and learn how to end food insecurity in Onslow County,” Filomena said.
This is the fourth year The Empty Bowls Project Onslow has hosted the fundraiser, which are held all over the country by similar groups in an effort to raise awareness and fight hunger in their respective communities.
“Earlier this season the local potters and customers that go to Firefly Pottery and Accidental Artist would pay to paint a bowl and they would be donated to us,” Filomena said.
Restaurants that are donating soup and food for the event include Forkful, Red Lobster, Curry International Shoppe and Northside High School’s Culinary Arts Academy among others.
Throughout the meal, Onslow Winds Jazz Ensemble will provide music, the blessing will be given by Mercy’s Garden Richlands Montessori Preschool and members of Nicholson Academy of Dance will perform.
“You can learn about food insecurity, how to help in your area, and all the proceeds will help the people and soup kitchen locally,” Filomena said.
Specialty items like gift cards, massages, hotel stays, jewelry and men and women’s clothing by Lularoe will be available for purchase during a silent auction held during the event.
Tickets are available at the door for $20.
