SURF CITY -- NC Department of Transportation officials will host a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for the new Surf City Bridge.

The event will start at 11 a.m. Monday in the lot across the street from 116 South Topsail Drive. NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson, Transportation Board Member Sandra Fountain and Surf City Mayor Zander Guy will be in attendance, according top a news release.

The planned bridge will have a 65-foot vertical clearance, and will not need to be opened for passing vessels.

"The new bridge will also provide additional capacity along that route, an important improvement when emergency access to the mainland is needed in cases of hurricane evacuation," the release stated.
