PINE KNOLL SHORES | Area homeschool families are invited to a free day of activities this month at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

The aquarium’s annual Homeschool Day will be held Sept. 15, and this year’s theme is “Conservation at Home,” highlighting local animals and conservation practices families can do in their own backyards.

“We want to focus on activities and practices that people can do at home, in their backyards, in their communities, to help wildlife and the environment,” Aquarium Educator Jeff Harms said.

According to aquarium information, activities for the day will include crafts and other student activities as well as live animal programs.

The aquarium classroom will be open and will feature citizen science topics such as Frogwatch, Seafood Watch, how to identify your backyard habitat and the benefit of using rain barrels.

There will also be educational programs and activities such as water labs, scavenger hunts, and a bird identification station. Those interested can also sign up for a Behind the Scenes tour and several special activities for a fee at the time of arrival.

Aquarium admission and Homeschool Day activities are free to homeschool families with proof of homeschool registration. The aquarium Homeschool Day event is in addition to the one free admission day allowed each year for homeschool families.
