This past Sunday, Lakeview Baptist Church held a joyful day of homecoming with special singing along with guest speaker, the Rev. Allen Lefler.

A delightful time of food and fellowship followed the service.

News from the library

Have you been thinking about getting a library card? Or maybe, you have misplaced yours. If so, I have good news to share. This month you can come in to the West Davidson Public Library and get a free card. Just be sure to bring some form of identification with your correct phone number and address.

Adult game night will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20. The library will have available some new and old board games for you to play on your own or as a family.

Banned book week will begin on Sept. 23 and continue through Sept. 29. Banned book week is an annual event to celebrate the freedom to read. Books featured throughout the week are ones that have been targeted in the past for removal or restrictions from schools and libraries.

The young adult book club will meet at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The club is reading "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling.

The library will hold Tech Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 25. Bring your smart phone, laptop, tablet, or iPad for a lesson on the basics of smart devices by library manager Sierra Everhart.

Be sure to attend one or all of these fun events offered at the library in the next couple of weeks.

Professor Hasty's work at the school

I recently found the following article published in this newspaper on Sept. 3, 1903, shortly after the Churchland School resumed classes.

"Prof. S.G Hasty, of Monroe, N.C., graduate of Wake Forest College, has opened up a first-class school at Churchland, Boone Township, with more than fifty students on roll the first week. Prof. Hasty is a most excellent young man and will conduct a good school and we are pleased to know that the good people of that section of the county are enthusiastic for the school and are rallying to his support. May the good work go on."

Scripture to ponder

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. -- Proverbs 28:26 KJV
