Surf City celebrates National Arbor Day
Surf City celebrated National Arbor Day on April 24, 2009 with the insurances of a Surf City Arbor Day proclamation that read in part: "Whereas in 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planning of trees... and whereas trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products... and whereas trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas and beautify our community."
N.C. Division of Forest Resources employees David Rooks and Mitch Harris presented the Town of Surf City with its 7th Tree City USA Award, which was one of the 70 cities and towns in N.C. and one of more than 3,000 in the nation to receive this recognition. Mayor Zander Guy in his remarks thanked and paid recognition to the Surf City Beautification Committee members, the Surf City Town Council and Surf City Parks and Recreation Director Kristie Grubb.
