Mentality long gone?
At 7 a.m. on August 2, 2008, I returned from walking my dog on the beach as I do every weekend. I love that time of day because it is peaceful and quiet. However, there is a constant reminder that people have been there recently because of all that is left behind. Beer bottles (isn't there a law permitting this?), soda cans, food wrappers, bait containers, dog feces, broken chairs, rafts, boogie boards and umbrellas are left where man, or should I say animals, have previously been. What has happened to the morals and decency of our visitors? The total disregard for the beauty of our beaches is disturbing. Is it that there aren't enough trashcans distributed along the accesses or have people totally lost their minds? Perhaps someday the leaders on Topsail Island will consider purchasing a Beach Rake and have the beaches cleaned early in the morning because we certainly cannot rely on people to clean up after themselves. Clearly that mentality is long gone.
