Guy C. Lee provides grant in the name of beauty

People always notice when an intersection is dirty or when a highway median is covered with trash. That is when the comments come from all of us, pointing out how disgusting an area looks, or how it appears to have not been maintained in some time.

However, nobody ever looks at a beautiful clean area of public property and says, “Wow! That lawn in front of that city limits sign looks so great with those new bushes there.” Well, maybe it is time we did notice things like that.

Public areas are much like what everyone’s mother has once said about their bedroom, “It’s not gonna clean itself.” If that is the case, then who has been cleaning them?

One answer to that question is the Sneads Ferry Beautification Committee. In coordination with various other volunteer groups in town, the Beautification Committee has been keeping the Sneads Ferry for the better part of the last decade.

Like many projects, the Sneads Ferry Beautification Committee relies on the financial support of people and businesses to keep the projects moving. One of the more generous donors has been Guy C. Lee Building Materials on Highway 210. This year was no exception.

As they do every year, Guy C. Lee presented the organization with a check towards keeping Sneads Ferry clean and green. This year is was in the amount of $250.

Beautification Committee Treasurer Margo Stafford and Co-chairperson Claire Wunder were present at the ceremony to receive the donation on behalf of the group.

“We really like Guy C. Lee. They’re so helpful to our cause. We’re really thankful for their help in keeping Sneads Ferry beautiful,” said Stafford.

The group has added their touch to many places in town, including the intersection of highways 210 and 172, Folkstone Road and 210, the Sneads Ferry Library, the Sneads Ferry Firehouse, and the historic Yopps Meeting House.

The work of the Beautification Committee shines throughout the town in various ways. Whether it’s in the flower beds at the fire station, seasonal banners placed atop the utility poles, or other gardens maintained around town, all can be attributed to the dedicated organization.

In addition to the help of donors. The Beautification Committee also stays financed by the sale of dining-out discount books.

“That’s our main source of financing that keeps us going year-round,” said Wunder.

The committee is always welcoming of new members. They meet once a month at the Escoba Bay Club to discuss ways to improve the area. Those interested in helping the Sneads Ferry Beautification Committee or even joining the them can call 910 327-2435 for more information.
