Bingo is back

Bingo will be held every Thursday night through September 12, 2008 in the Historic Assembly Building located at 720 Channel Boulevard in topsail Beach. The Historical Society of Topsail Island sponsors bingo with all proceeds dedicated to maintaining the historic Assembly Building. Doors open at 6 p.m., Early Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m., Regular Bingo starts at 7 p.m. The Assembly Building is smoke free; snacks and soft drinks are available. Come join a fun night for the entire family.

 

Sneads Ferry Beautification Committee

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month from September through May at the Clubhouse in Escoba Bay beginning at 9:30 a.m. The objective is to beautify Sneads Ferry. Currently we maintain several plant beds plus the attractive banners hanging throughout the Community. New members and guests are always welcome. Sneads Ferry Rotary Club

Members of the Sneads Ferry Rotary Club meet every Wednesday at noon. Visitors are welcome to join us and have the opportunity to meet local ladies and gentlemen of the community of Sneads Ferry and the adjoining areas. Topsail Ladies

Surf City AA

Girl Scouts

Al-Anon

Hampstead Al-Anon to Meet at HUMC

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

The Hampstead Al-Anon Family Group meets on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Hampstead United Methodist Church on Hwy 17 about one mile north of the Food Lion Shopping Center.

 

 

Events and Celebrations

 

Nobody’s Social Club

The Nobody’s Social Club of Holly Ridge is having a raffle and fundraiser on July 19 at Dale’s Pub located at 775 East Ocean Rd. in Holly Ridge. First prize is a Troy-Bilt “Pony” 17.5 H.P. 42” cut speed shift on the go.

There will be door prizes, a 50/50 drawing and chicken plates for $6 the day of, or $5 in advance. Tickets are available from any member or at Dale’s Pub. Motorcycle parking. Troy-Bilt from Lowes, come one, come all.

Drawing for first prize is 3 p.m., 50/50 drawing at 3:15 p.m. and plates served from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

The Nobody’s Social Club is a non-profit charitable organization based in the Holly Ridge area for 11 years. They assist people and families in time of need with financial and material support. This fundraiser will provide funding for their Christmas efforts.

 

Miracle for Marc BBQ Fundraiser

July 3 and 4, 2008 at four corners in Sneads Ferry off Hwy 172 and 210, beginning at 9 a.m. Free delivery for five or more dinners and delivery to the elderly. Dinners include BBQ pork, coleslaw, baked beans, roll and a brownie for $6 per dinner.

Marc Dubrey-Smith was injured in an ATV accident on May 30, 2008. He is in Pitt Memorial PICU with numerous serious injuries. Marc is 15 and a student and athlete at Dixon High School. This fundraiser is being organized by Soccer Coach Kevin Hicks and the DHS Boys and Girls Soccer Team. The fundraiser will help pay for Marc's medical expenses. 

 

Topsail Chamber’s Annual Auction & Beach Party

It's coming! The Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will conduct its Annual Auction & Beach Party on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Assembly Building in Topsail Beach beginning at 6 p.m. All items that are donated for this event are sold at either a live or silent auction that will benefit the chamber and tourism office. Your support is crucial to the success of this event. This is perhaps our biggest non-dues fundraiser; its success helps to prevent our need to raise the annual membership dues.

As you know, this is one of our most popular events with lots of food, fun and bargains. We hope you will not only contribute an item for sale but also come yourself and join in the fun! After we finish with the tedious business of the auction, we will party to the DJ spinning of Clint Spell.

Greater Topsail Kiwanis Golf Tournament

Castle Bay Golf Club hosts a four person Captain’s Choice tournament that creates scholoarships for Topsail area high school students on Saturday, October 4 at 9 a.m. Sponsorships: $100 a cart, $250 a hole. Thurston Art Gallery presents "Photographers of our World, from Shanghai to Sneads Ferry!"

Photographers Phillip Jarrell, Harvey Bradshaw and John Echo in conjunction with Thurston Art Gallery of Sneads Ferry present “Photographers of our World, from Shanghai to Sneads Ferry!” The show dates run through August 2, 2008; premier, featuring local musician Will Revo, is July 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Phillip Jarrell is a photographer, songwriter and designer of Jarrell Guitars, his latest project. Harvey Bradshaw’s photography features the Marine Corps Vietnam Era Fighter pilot and images of Africa. John Echo is a photographer of coastal waters: Hampstead and Sneads Ferry, retired production artist and enjoys most taking photographs from his jet ski!

Missiles and More Museum presents “Stories and More”

Enjoy stories, activities, arts and crafts and refreshments for children ages five through eight. Free!

“Turtle Talks”

“Turtle Talks,” sponsored by the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center, a.k.a. the Sea Turtle Hospital, have resumed and will continue every Wednesday through Labor Day. This popular one-hour presentation (3:45 to 4:45 p.m.) is fun for ages K through adult, with lots of hands-on opportunities, visuals and handouts. Bring your cameras for some cool photo ops, but please leave food and drinks at home. Program is at the Surf City Community Center, JH Batts Rd. (off Rt. 210, between Docksider and Gilligan’s). Sneads Ferry Community Theatre

Hardee Bucks fundraising booklets are now available for purchase at the library in Hampstead. Purchases of books help to support the Topsail Township Friends of the Library as they buy books and other supplies for the Hampstead library.

Late Registration for Youth Sports

The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department's five youth basketball/ cheerleading districts are conducting late registration on a space available basis. The registration fee is $19 and a copy of the birth certificate or other legal document stating the date of birth is required. Surf City Parks and Recreation

• Movies in the Park:

A free movie will be show at Soundside Park on Thursday, July 31. Everyone is invited to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and watch a family movie under the stars.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase. 

• Concerts in the Park:

A free concert will be held at Soundside Park in July. Fried Flounder will play on Thursday, July 10 and the Sea Pans will play on Friday, July 18. Both concerts are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

• NC Aquariums Summer Outreach Programs:

Come join in the fun this summer at Surf City Community Center as it hosts N.C. Aquarium Summer Outreach Programs each Wednesday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The programs run through August 13 and are free and open to the public. Dee Thonnard Rudolph, a Fort Fisher Aquarium Outreach Coordinator, will present a variety of interactive programs for children and their families. • Surf City Parks and Recreation Department Summer Camp Programs

Surf City’s Department of Parks and Recreation will offer six new weeklong summer camp programs for children ages 6 to 10. The programs for July and August will be Under the Sea, Surf City Here We Come, Historically Speaking, and Welcome to the Show. Participants will learn about marine life, exciting things to do in and around Surf City, local history, and art. A variety of off-site outings will be taken such as trips to museums, a plantation, a baseball game, the beach and more. Local artists will teach watercolors, colored pencils, altered art and other mediums during one of the weeks, as well. • New “Baby Stepping” Class:

Baby Stepping is a stroller workout for parents and caregivers of small children that can ride safely in a stroller. The class will include aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, jumping and skipping. Some resistance training will also be included. The class is for all levels. Attendees should bring water and an exercise band. Instructor Dale DePue is a licensed Physical Therapist and Pilates Instructor. She owns Core Focus Pilates and Physical Therapy, LLC in Hampstead. • Bellydance Classes

The Hip Circle is offering eight weeks of belly dance classes for beginner and intermediates for ladies 18 and older at the Holly Ridge Fire Department. The basic belly dance class is from 7 to 8 p.m. and will concentrate on the very basic movements of belly dance. Fee $15. The intermediate class is from 6 to 7 p.m. and offers instruction for the next level of movements. Fee $30. Both classes will be informally instructed, with visual and open discussion. Come with comfy cloths, water and a towel or yoga mat. Poplar Grove News

• New expanded hours

Poplar Grove Farmers Market is responding to the many requests received from working parents, commuters and folks that can't make it to the morning market and will now re-open from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every second and fourth Wednesday.

The regular market, Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. remains beautifully, unchanged.

If the afternoon market is a success, the farmers will eventually re-open the market every Wednesday. Afternoon market dates: July 9, July 23, Aug.13, Aug. 27, Sept. 10, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Oct. 22.

• Poplar Grove Plantation’s Farmers Market 2008 Season

New to the market for 2008 is the Poplar Shopper Card. 

So many customers came each week last year to check out the market and do their food shopping. This year patrons can pick up a free Poplar Shopper Card and receive gifts from the market intermittently. They’re available at the Wagon Booth throughout the season.

Everything at this market is grown, raised or made in North Carolina, which means that produce is available by season. Some of what you’ll find will be fresh cut flowers, Red Buckeye, Southern Sundrops, geraniums, bedding plants, cool season vegetable plants, organic lettuce, gourmet greens and culinary herbs. 

In addition there’ll be eggs, honey, goat sausage, peanut butter, crab cakes, scallops, Tipsy Cakes and, many shoppers will be happy to hear that Great Harvest Bread Co. will be back with fresh baked bread. A diverse assortment of hand crafted gifts will also be for sale; jewelry, clothing, quilted decorations, crocheted shawls, scenic photographs, leather belts, pottery and more. Each vendor is on site selling their own goods and, will happily share information about their products or business. 

Poplar Grove’s Farmers Market is a stone’s throw north of the New Hanover County line at 10200 Rt. 17. The market is open Wednesdays, 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. from now until December 17 rain or shine.

• Poplar Grove Plantation’s Summer Children’s Programs

For Ages 5 and up. All classes meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Class fees are $13, registration, plus $5 supply fee each, per child.

June 26 – Simple Rag Dolls – Simple, fun, no sewing.

June 27 – Miniature Wood Baby Furniture and Dolls – We will assemble miniature wooden nursery furniture, paint it, and make little children and babies to play with.

 

The Onslow County Schools Preschool Program

The Onslow County Schools Preschool Program is currently accepting application for the 2008 school year. Children must be four years old by October 16, 2007.  Parents will need to provide a certified birth certificate and current shot record for their child, proof of residence and proof of income for the application to be complete. For more information, please call 989-2021 ext. 334 or visit the Preschool office at 200 Broadhurst Road to complete an application.
