Photography exhibit display at local libraries

A visual and artistic treat is just waiting to be experienced in the Pender County Public Libraries through the month of November. Pender County Public Libraries is hosting a photography exhibit titled, Telling Our StoriesFifty photographs by professional and amateur photographers from across North Carolina will be displayed in the public libraries in Burgaw and Hampstead. The exhibit is a blend of photography from winners of “Our State” magazine’s 2008 photography contest, works of professional photographers selected by their peers, and other works held by North Carolina Archives in Raleigh.

In collaboration with “Our State” magazine, the top winners of their annual amateur photography contest are on display. The works capture the spirit of North Carolina through images of people, places, wildlife, and landscapes, in color and black and white photographs. For 75 years, “Our State” has chronicled the lives of North Carolinians.

A selection committee convened by NC Cultural Resources chose from among works submitted by some of the state’s best professional photographers for the exhibit. These singular photographs examine nature, perceptions, spirituality, conflict, and the human condition, from across the state or across the planet.

Twenty-one of the photographs were chosen for the exhibit by a panel of experts from works by some of North Carolina’s best professional photographers. The remaining eighteen items from the North Carolina Archives reflecting the history of our state are being exhibited publicly for the first time.

Telling Our Stories is displayed in the public areas of the libraries and is free. A notebook of artist biographies and a program guide will be available for those viewing the exhibit. The traveling exhibit is touring eastern North Carolina while a second collection is touring the western region of the state.

Information about all library programs is available by calling 259-1234 or 270-4603 or by visiting the library website at www.youseemore.com/PenderPl/.
