John P. Hlavnicka FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army LTC John Paul Hlavnicka, 65, passed away on December 11, 2017 at his home surrounded by family and friends after a short but valiant battle with cancer. John was born March 17, 1952 in Breckenridge, Minnesota to the late James Hlavnicka and Kathleen Blouin Hlavnicka. In addition to his father, John is preceded in death by his wife, Lisa Reeves Hlavnicka, and his sisters, Terry and Nancy. John's survivors include his mother Kathleen; his siblings, Julie, Janice, Timothy, Thomas and Pat; numerous nieces and nephews, and the love of his life, Carla J. Mahaffey. John proudly served his country in the United States Army for a total of 23 years, the last 16 years being stationed at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, NC and serving as a Combat Medic/CRNA with Joint Special Operations Command. John served in Vietnam, as well as seven tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was very highly decorated (including two Bronze Star Medals) for his service. He was extremely proud of his Airborne Jump Wings and his affiliation with JSOC, and served as an invaluable member and leader within that organization. John ultimately retired from the service in 2008 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. John began his education in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Wyndmere, ND. He graduated from Penn State University with a BSN in Nursing, and went on to graduate from the University of Texas with an MSN in Nurse Anesthesiology. John enjoyed riding his Harley, photography, and restoring cars, especially his 1966 Chevelle and 1974 Chevy Nova. He spent his life serving his country, helping others in need, and was a true hero of our Nation's war on terror. He is, and always will be, greatly missed by all who knew him. Lt. Col. John P.
