  • The power of numbers

  • I recently received a violation letter from the Town of Holly Ridge. The weeds outside one of our buildings have exceeded 10 inches in height and, therefore, are creating a health hazard. Health hazard? Really? What disease comes from weeds? Were they non-toxic at 9 inches? Apparently we have all been fooled by those silly blooming things. Bad weeds.

But this made me think about numbers. The gun world is full of them. Did you know a rifle barrel must be at least 16-inches long and a shot gun barrel 18-inches long? An SBR (short barreled rifle) is considered a Class 3 firearm and requires lots of extra paperwork and fees.
The Taurus Judge revolver (and the S&W Governor) takes this rule and shakes it up a bit since both revolvers can shoot pistol ammo and .410 shot gun ammo. The Judge barrel can be from 2 to 10 inches in length.
In 1959 ArmaLite sold the designs of the AR-10 and AR- 15 to Colt. AR stands for Armalite, not assault rifle. The 15 represents a model number. AR-15 are versatile and can be built to shoot .223/5.56, 7.62x39, 6.5, 6.8, 300 black out, .22 and 5.7x28 ammo. They are a popular hunting rifle and used in competition, including 3 gun.
The AK-47 was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov (1946) and put into production in 1947.
A gun built before 1899 is NOT considered a firearm by ATF and can be sold without paperwork.
All firearms manufactured from 1899 to present are considered “modern.”
Wyoming has the highest percentage of gun ownership. Hawaii has the lowest percentage.
Over 43 percent of NC residents own guns.
The states with the most restrictive gun laws average 20 percent ownership: New York, California, Maryland and Illinois.
Knowledge is power. Have a safe 4th of July — and remember to watch out for those weeds!
