  • WILMINGTON — The future of the state’s film tax incentive may be uncertain, but the local film industry shows no signs of slowing down as three notable projects head into town to begin production this week.
First out of the gate is “The Sin Seer,” a BET movie starring Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Lisa Arrindell Anderson (“Bolden!”). The suspense thriller follows Rose Ricard (Arrindell Anderson), born with the gift to see the sin in people’s souls, detect lies and, sometimes, predict thoughts before a person forms them. Using her abilities to right wrongs in society, Rose soon discovers that even she can’t foresee what will happen when her past comes back to haunt her. Gregory Alan Williams, C. Thomas Howell and Michael Ironside also star.
Over the course of filming, which is scheduled to run through May 10, crews will head to Wilmington Coastal Boxing, stage a band performance at the Bourgie Nights nightspot on Princess Street and film scenes with prop gunfire at two locations in town Wednesday.
NCasting’s Vanessa Neimeyer is coordinating local extras casting for the film.
Production is also underway for the FX comedy pilot “How & Why” from the mind of Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. In the dark comedy, “Eastbound & Down’s” John Hawkes plays Goodman Hesselman, a TV host who loses his passion for the show and gets replaced by a younger host. Moving to a small town with his family in tow, Hesselman sets out to start a new program on a smaller scale with the help of a new boss, played by “Arrested Development’s” Michael Cera. Recent Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”) also stars as Hesselman’s unsatisfied wife.
The potential series, which will film for eight or nine days, has planned shoots outside Roland Grise Middle School, on the Sixth Street bridge and in the hallways of the Alton Lennon Federal Courthouse.
Ashli Bogart is in charge of local extras casting for the pilot.
Finally, “Max Steel,” the latest superhero movie to call the Port City home, will make its way in front of the camera.
A big-screen adaptation based on the Mattel action figure, the film follows 16-year-old Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) who, after discovering he can generate the most powerful energy in the universe, bonds with the only being that can contain the power: an alien named Steel. Together, the two form the superhero Max Steel to face off with an alien menace and uncover the secrets of their pasts.
Crews have been working for several weeks building sets at the Ideal Cement plant, which will act as primary filming location for the movie.
Marty Sui Casting is handling local extras casting for the film.
These three productions will be in good company in the region with the CBS summer series “Under the Dome” currently filming its second season and Fox’s fall hit “Sleepy Hollow” starting production May 6. “Dome” and “Sleepy Hollow” both use soundstages at EUE/Screen gems Studios on 23rd Street.
Page 2 of 2 - Over the next few weeks crews will be the busiest they’ve been in years.
“It’s what I like to call a good load for the city,” said Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission. “It gets the crews working, the vendors busy and the studios full.”
