The Topsail Island Association of Realtors will host an Open House Weekend on May 3 with more than 50 homes holding open houses for the public to tour, give feedback and potentially win some great prizes.

The Topsail Island Association of Realtors will host an Open House Weekend on May 3 with more than 50 homes holding open houses for the public to tour, give feedback and potentially win some great prizes. Participants must be over 18 years old and visit a minimum of five homes to be entered in the drawings to win a $500 cruise gift certificate; a one-week summer vacation at Williamsburg Plantation in Willamsburg, Va.; a trivate inshore fishing charter for four; or one of many local business gift certificates, gift baskets and donated prizes.

Home tour maps will be available at all homes on the tour, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the association office, located at 13775 NC Hwy 50, Suite 402, in Treasure Coast Landing in Surf City. A Home Tour Reception for all Topsail Home Tour participants will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the association with appetizers, drinks, goodies from tour sponsors and grand prize drawings at 6 p.m.


Easter Sunrise Services

Faith Harbor UMC in Surf City will host a 7 a.m. Sunrise Service in Soundside Park, Surf City, on April 20, followed by Sanctuary Service at 9:20 and 11 a.m. and an Easter egg gunt and luncheon at noon.


New River Garden Club Plant Sale

The New River Garden Club Plant Sale will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 29 near Four Corners in Sneads Ferry on N.C. 172 just north of N.C. 210 .

The sale will feature a huge selection of greenery suited to the climate and includes landscaping plants, perennials, annuals and garden related items. Experts will be on hand to help with selections. All proceeds benefit the New River Garden Club scholarship fund.


Lawn seminar

The Pender County Extension Master Gardener Speakers’ Bureau presents Lawns. Presented by Pender Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, David Hull, this free class will be held May 6 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Pender County Public Library in Hampstead. Refuse to be a Victim Training

In cooperation with S.A.F.E of NC, the Surf City Community Center will host Refuse to be a Victim Training on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Surf City Community Center for ages 16 and up. Cost is $25 and includes the NRA Refuse to Be a Victim Handbook. The seminar teaches men and women easy-to-understand methods yto increase awareness and prevent criminal confrontation. Oral cancer exams

Surf City Dental is offering free visual head and neck oral cancer exams on April 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. to educate the community about oral health. It is not necessary to be a current Surf City Dental patient to receive these free screenings.


Citizen survey

The Town of North Topsail Beach has released a citizen survey as part of its current initiative to create a Comprehensive Systemwide Plan for Parks and Recreation for the Town. A link to an online survey is currently on the homepage of the town’s website, The survey goal is to generate responses from a broad range of North Topsail Beach citizens and identify their needs and preferences for recreational opportunities. The results of the survey will be used to influence future plans and would be a part of the Town’s application for North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grants. Eastern Carolina Council is assisting the Town with developing the plan and the final document which will be presented to the Board of Aldermen later this year.

The Town of Surf City, Parks and Recreation department will hold it’s annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 19th at 10:30 am at Sound Side Park.

Cape Fear BBQ Festival

The 1st annual Cape Fear BBQ Festival will be held June 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and June 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Old River Farms, 8711 Old River Road in Burgaw. There will be a barbecue cook-off, an antique truck and tractor display, arts and crafts, commercial vendors, plants and flowers, a children’s entertainment zone and lots of Southern barbecue. About Boating Safely course

The Greater Topsail Area Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 10-09, is presenting About Boating Safely (ABS), a basic course that covers the essential topics related to safe boating practices. Students will learn what safety equipment is required by law, trailering, handling the vessel, radio communications, navigation rules and responsibilities, and weather issues.

The course is open to all ages and meets the N.C. legal requirements for youth operators of personal watercraft.

The three-session course will meet at the Sloop Point Volunteer Fire Department, 19470 Hwy 17 North in Hampstead. Classes will meet on April 22 from 6 to 9 p.m.; April 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and April 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. Registration will be held on the first night of class. The registration fee of $350 includes the textbook. A reduced rate is available for a second member of the same household who shares a textbook. 2014 Easter Egg Hunt

Everyone is invited to the 9th annual Easter Egg Hunt at Hampstead Kiwanis Park on April 19 hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Hampstead. The fun will begin at 10 a.m. for children in 5th grade and under. There will be eggs, candy and prizes; a book give-away; a professional photographer on hand; concessions; and the Kiwanis Easter Bunny and Scooby Doo. Bring your own Easter basket. The Town of Topsail Beach is planning to install paddling trails in the marshes of Topsail Island. On May 3 there will be a public meeting at 820 South Anderson Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be three trail presentations regarding how to use the area resources for these trails. The Town of Holly Ridge is currently looking for vendors for its 4th of July Liberty Fest and Fireworks. Hops of Spring Beer Festival

The Hops of Spring Beer Festival will move to a new location this year.

The festival, scheduled for April 26, will be held on 23 acres at 25488 US Hwy. 17 in Surf City after outgrowing its former site on Topsail Island.

Nationally recognized patriotic rock band Madison Rising will perform with local favorite Annandale Heights opening.

The Hops of Spring Beer Festival, an event by the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce, features more than 20 breweries, and a myriad of food and shopping vendors.

Pre-sale tickets are available online through and the Chamber’s website. Tickets are $25 for the entire day, April 26, noon to 7 p.m. Admission tickets include concerts and brews. Admission the day of the festival is $35 per person.

Kiwanis scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Topsail Island Area, continuing its long standing commitment to the young people of Onslow and Pender counties, has four scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each available for graduating seniors at Dixon and Topsail High Schools. Two of the four scholarships have the requirement that the applicant be a member in good standing of the school’s Key Club.

Additionally, the club has available a fifth scholarship in the amount of $2,500 for a graduating senior who is the child or grandchild of a current member of the Kiwanis Club of Topsail Island Area. North Carolina residency is not a requirement for the applicant.

Kiwanis golf tournament

The Kiwanis Club of Topsail Island Area is accepting team registrations for its 2014 golf tournament. The golf tournament will be held May 3 at North Shore Country Club, on N.C. 210 in Sneads Ferry. Tee time is 8:30 a.m., and the format will be Captain’s Choice.

Kiwanis is anticipating a sell-out event, so golfers are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to register. Entry fees are $75 per individual and $300 for each team of four. Tournament business sponsorships are $250. Proceeds are used on club projects that benefit youth in the greater Topsail area.

Horse shelter

Pender County Animal Shelter is seeking community support to build a facility to help the abused and mistreated horses of Pender County.

The initial cost for the Pender County Horse Shelter Project is $25,000, which will build the facility, purchase a trailer and start a medical fund for abused horses. One-hundred percent of donations directed to the horse shelter will go to the project.

Pender County Health Department offers free blood pressure screenings.

The screenings will be held at Topsail Senior Center on the third Tuesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at Pender Adult Services on the fourth Thursday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Master’s Touch Resale Store
