  • After a great deal of planning, preparation and anticipation, the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Extravaganza came together on time and pretty much as planned. Cindy Kampenís Topsail Athletic Boosters Team had the facilities, concessions and systems organized and ready.
The event started with team introductions. The Topsail Fury team included District Attorney, Ben David, Miss North Carolina USA Olivia Olivera, television personality Colin Hackman, County Commissioners David Williams and Chester Ward, Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith and many others.
The tipoff was controlled by the Harlem Ambassadors, and the game was somewhat lopsided thereafter.
At the halftime break the Harlem Ambassadors team played basketball-handling games with the young children in the audience. Then the HA team got all the children and the Topsail Fury team out on the floor with the HA team to dance Gundam Style. Following the dancing, Patty Homa and Cindy Kampen were asked to come to center court where they thanked the Harlem Ambassadors, all the volunteers and the audience for purchasing tickets to support the causes of the Kiwanis Club of Hampstead and the Topsail Athletic Boosters Club.
In the third period, Lady Majic of the Ambassadors decided to give the Topsail Fury five points for each basket and the score evened up for awhile.
After the game the Harlem Ambassadors and members of the Topsail Fury signed autographs for enthusiastic fans. Topsail Fury guard David Williams posed for a photo op with Harlem Ambassador, Lady Majic and Miss North Carolina USA Olivia Olivera.
After the last autographs were signed and the teams had showered and changed, the teams and the volunteers enjoyed a delicious post-game meal. Mixed amongst the yums regarding the meal were sighs of relief that the event was over.
This event was a massive undertaking for the Kiwanis Club and our partners the Topsail Athletic Boosters especially with all the other Club activities going on at this time of year. We owe a big thank you to Steve and Andrea Wheatley for Co-Chairing the event. We also owe a big thank you to our partner The Topsail Athletic Boosters, especially Cindy Kampen and Julie Cota for doing a great job with their responsibilities.
Most of all we owe our thanks to our sponsors who stepped up again to make this project a winner. Please thank them by using their goods and services.

Bill Underwood is the secretary for the Kiwanis Club of Hampstead.
