  • Topsail Gun Gal: Common sense is not quite so common

  • People are being robbed and stabbed for three dollars, three kids under the age of 10 were suspended from a local school for an airsoft gun and a lighter shaped like a gun and a few of the passengers on the missing airliner had stolen passports. Folks, itís official, the world is going to pot.

Of course if you live in Colorado, I mean that literally.
What do we do? Weíve devalued life with lack of personal contact and video games. How do you not notice your neighbor is dead inside their home for six years and the only excuse is that her car payment was auto-drafted? We make it so evasive to get onto an airplane that apparently no one thought to confirm identities. Most importantly we seem to forget that kids do stupid things, and yes, we all did them.
Iím not knocking the officials at the Freeman School of Engineering (quite a name for an elementary school), but Iím confused. From the chat sites I could find, parents are upset that they werenít notified of this event and some even wanted to know why the parents didnít know what their kids had. Okay, hereís a challenge for you. Turn to the person next to you and write down all the things you think they have in their pockets (or purse Ė and good luck with that).  Now ask them if you are right. Amazing isnít it what people carry without your knowledge.
Do I think the kids brought those items to school to get in trouble or to cause trouble? No. Do I think the kids were curious and finding a lighter on the ground was too tempting? Yes, itís possible.
I think we are freaking out about the wrong things here. Did you watch the Weather Channel special on Methane gas? Our planet is doomed so get out and buy that Ferrari or get that boob job. No reason to wait!
    On a lighter note ...
This weekend we raised more than $260 on Saturday alone for our Surf City K-9 unit. A great big hooray to all the wonderful people at the Womenís Expo and the participants at our Conceal and Carry Class. You all rock! I would like to give a shout out to Kayda (and her handler Officer Eric Peterson) who performed for almost three hours straight to an appreciative audience. They are an amazing team.
Remember, knowledge is power and mixed with common sense it can be the most powerful force in the universe.
