Surf City Adult Volleyball returns Jan 6 for its winter season following the six-team fall league where the ALL-STARS once again prevailed as tournament champions on Dec. 16.
Entry fee for new teams is $300 while individuals may sign up for $50 for an eight-game season, with games on Monday nights plus games and/or practices on Friday nights. Teams compete in six-person court volleyball with seven required to be on a team roster. Individuals will be assigned to a new ďhouseĒ team. No more than 10 teams can be accepted.

Carolina Girls Outdoor School
The Carolina Girls Outdoor School will be a series of hands-on seminars for women on March 15 during the Cape Fear Wildlife Expo in Wilmington at the Wilmington Convention Center.
Cost is $125 per person with one additional member at $75. This includes a three-day admission to the expo, a catered lunch, a T-shirt, a goody bag and door prize drawing for fishing and hunting outdoors trip.

3v3 MLK Day Basketball Tournament
The all-day East Coast Sports 3v3 MLK Day Basketball Tournament will be held Jan. 20. Co-presented by Offshore Sports and Surf City Parks & Recreation and sponsored by East Coast Sports of Surf City, the event features teams in four different age divisions.
Cost is $12 per player and teams may have three to five players. All teams will play a minimum of three games. Winners will receive championship medals and championship tournament T-shirts.
U-12 plays at 8:30 followed by U-15 at noon, U-18 at 3:30 p.m. and adults at 7 p.m. in the Surf City Community Center gymnasium.

Hammerheads season tickets

The Sneads Ferry Community Theater will hold open auditions for the upcoming production of Cocktails With Mimi by Mary Chase. Watercolor exhibit and sale
A free exhibit showcasing works by Southport artist Roger Tatum includes two original watercolors along with many limited edition prints now on display at Pender County Public Library in Burgaw.
In addition to the framed works, giclee prints of many additional paintings are available for purchase at the library. A portion of each sale will benefit the Friends of the Pender County Library.

The Big Read
Cape Fear Museum is one of 77 organizations selected to receive funds from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to host a Big Read project in the Cape Fear region. The $16,000 grant will be used to provide opportunities for the community to read The Things They Carried, a collection of related stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War by Tim OíBrien. Activities related to the book will be offered through February.
The Big Read Greater Wilmington also coincides with the Cape Fear Museum traveling exhibition Mail Call, open through Jan. 20. Mail Call tells the story of military mail and communication from the American Revolution to current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. active duty military and their families with valid identification will be admitted free of charge to the exhibit.
