New fees for registering and titling boats have taken effect.

It will now cost $30 a year to register boats less than 26 feet and $50 for those greater than 26 feet. The three-year registration fee is $90 for vessels less than 26 and $150 for those that are larger.

The cost for a new or transfer title is $30.

Fee increases and changes for vessel registration are the result of recent legislation passed by the N.C. General Assembly.

The additional revenue will help to maintain and dredge shallow draft inlets and navigation channels. The new law requires that the N.C. Wildlife Commission transfer 50 percent of the fee revenue to the new Shallow Draft Navigation Channel and Lake Dredging Fund.
