Celebrate National Estuaries Week by helping spruce up a local preserve and then enjoy a kayak trip on the nearby waters.

The N.C. Coastal Federation is sponsoring the shoreline cleanup at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve and a kayak trip to follow on the waters of Stump Sound. The event will be held on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Volunteers will clean up the shoreline along Stump Sound from 10 to 11 a.m. As part of the Estuaries Week celebration, federation staff will then pull seine nets and host kids’ activities, like fish printing on free T-shirts.

Representatives from local environmental agencies and organizations will be on hand before and throughout lunch with educational exhibits.

In the afternoon, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a fee-based kayak tour led by Wilmington’s Hook, Line and Paddle and federation staff. There will also be a free one-hour marsh walk and birding tour.
