Organizers of the upcoming Strawberry Festival are looking for dishes that best highlight the star of the event.

The third annual Strawberry Festival will be held May 10 and 11 in Wallace at the Wallace Women’s Club Building. As part of the festival, there will be a Strawberry Recipe contest with cash prizes. The categories are appetizers, salads and entrees; breads, muffins and scones; and desserts, including cobblers, crisps, cakes, pies, cookies and candy. There is a youth entry also.

“Each entry must be original and contain at least one cup of fresh North Carolina strawberries,” contest organizer Georgia Farrior said.

Submit strawberry entries on May 10 from 4 to 5 p.m. Judging takes place from 6 to 7, and containers are to be picked up at 7 p.m. A recipe including correct sizes of measurements and method of preparation must be included. Winners will be announced at the Carolina Strawberry Festival on May 11 during the 11 a.m. opening ceremony. Entries are judged on taste/appeal, presentation; originality/creativity; and ease of preparation.

Each recipe should be typed on an 8 ˝-by-11 sheet of white paper and include the contestant’s name, address and phone number in the upper right-hand corner of the recipe page. Each participant can enter one recipe in each category. Recipe entries becomes the property of the Carolina Strawberry Festival, according to Farrior.  For more information contact Farrior at 910-470-4185. There will also be Strawberry Recipe books on sale at the festival.

On May 10 there will be a street party and barbecue cook-off. On May 11 there will be a daylong street fair with crafts, music, a beer-and-wine garden and lots of great food from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown Wallace. Festival admission is free.
