The final day of TBA Basketball play on Saturday, Feb. 23, saw hundreds of local basketball fans brave the wintery rain to watch the local youth of the Hampstead and surrounding communities showcase their talents, with three teams finishing the season with unblemished win/loss records, and others positioning themselves for seed positions in the year-end tournament, which started on Sunday.

In the Co-Ed 1st & 2nd grade division, ShipOnSite won out over a scrappy SecondWindFitnessCentersquad to end their season with an 8-1 record and position themselves as the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Team 84 Lumber was close behind, ending their campaign with a 7-2 record.

In the Girls’ 3rd-5th Grade division, The Thomas Construction Group entry won out over Pender Pines Garden Center to end up with a 7-2 season record and capture first place in that division. Blue Heron Landscapes dropped a heartbreaker to Say It Loud Designs by two points, leaving them in second position for the season and second seed in the tournament pairings.

In the Boys’ 3rd-4th grade sector, DiscoveryPlaceChildCareCentercaptured the top spot with an unblemished 9-0 seasonal record. Although winding up in a third-place tie in this division, Canady & Son Exterminating, Inc. put on a real display of basketball showmanship against Brett Adams Homes, up by two points at the end of the third period, holding on through the pandemonium in the Auxiliary Gym, to eke out a 32-31 victory.

In the Boys’ 5th-6th grade sect, The Bagel Bakery bakers overpowered a Vehicle Tracking Systems Corp. squad to finish the regular season with an unbeaten 9-0 record and capture first seed in the TBA tournament.

The girls representing the 6th grade and up saw Village Pharmacy finish with an unblemished nine-win record, with 3 teams tying for second place, all with 6-3 records. Head-to-head records and coin flips will determine positioning in the tournament pairings. In the Boys’ 7th & 8th division, a strong Jacobi Hardware aggregation outscored Cherubini Orthodontics and upped their season record to 8-1 to capture the TBA Sectional title and the No. 1 seeding for tournament play. In the High School age group, Register’s Auto Collision Service squeaked out a narrow victory over Otero Family Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, 42-39 to gain a tie for the top spot along with P.T.’s Grille, both ending with 7-2 records.

Year-end tournament play started this past Sunday and will see games played every night during the week, with most championship games being played on Friday and Sunday, March 1 and 3. Again, TBA urges all residence to come out to the Topsail Middle School Gym this weekend and support the local youth of our community.
